What happened to the citizens of the former GDR who resisted openly against the dictatorship of the SED (state party of the former GDR)? Where were they taken to, when the Stasi arrested innocent citizens?

In 2009 – twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, hardly anyone remembers the negative sides of the GDR past. Already a long time before the fall of the Berlin Wall, many people spoke up for democracy and human rights in the GDR and they paid a high price for this: imprisonment, interrogations lasting hours on end and inhuman prison conditions. These days, however, the pictures of the emotional days in autumn 1989 dominate. In numerous reports and coverages, refugees in the Prague embassy or people dancing on the Berlin Wall are being shown.

Franziska Vu and Carl-Wolfgang Holzapfel want to draw attention to the fate of the countless prisoners in the former GDR with this art performance. From October 29 to November 5, 2009, Carl-Wolfgang Holzapfel is once again imprisoned in a cell of the former remand prison of the Ministry for State Security. During this time, a webcam installed in his cell transmits his “everyday life in prison” to the Internet right around the clock (except restroom-time). The prison conditions too are as realistic as possible: three meals per day through the food hatch, at night, the light of the cell remains switched on. The photographer Franziska Vu accompanies the imprisonment campaign and will create a photographic work of art. This will be turned into a photo exhibition later and presented at various locations.
